May 14 – 24

May 14, is also Dance Like a Chicken Day. Also known as Chicken Dance Day, the goofy holiday celebrates the silly dance that is accompanied by the Chicken Song or the Chicken Dance Song.

Image result for chicken dance

“The chicken dance is a goofy, but fun party song and dance”

The song, sometimes also known as the Birdie Song, was composed in the 1950s by Swiss composer Werner Thomas. Accompanied by a series of movements, the song soon became popular in the West, especially in the United States, where it was performed at parties and weddings. The dance mimics the movements of a chicken and includes flapping of arms and wriggling of the body.”

May Day -Workers’ Day

1 May is a public holiday to commemorate the working class – the cogs that keep the clock ticking! Also Known as International Workers’ Day the holiday is widely celebrated, with as many as 80 countries honoring the date and what it stands for.  Historically it started with a striking workers protesting in Chicago, which resulted in law officers then proceeded to fire live ammunition at a defenseless crowd of unarmed strikers (sound familiar?). This public holiday serves as a stark reminder to governments of the power of the working class, but there is little to celebrate if you take the high unemployment figures, political chaos, and criminality in mind. But change is coming, as seen by the break-up of the  tripartite alliance, new unions, and public groups joining hands in mass protests. A   promising outcome is the court ruling against the recent nuclear project.

There is a Chinese curse which says ‘May he live in interesting times.’ Like it or not we are living in interesting times. They are times of danger and uncertainty; but they are also more open to the creative energy of men than any other time in history.

April Fool

“April Fools’ Day (sometimes called All Fools’ Day) is celebrated every year on April 1st by playing practical jokes and spreading hoaxes. The jokes and their victims are called April fools. People playing April Fool jokes expose their prank by shouting April Fool. Some newspapers, magazines, and other published media report fake stories, which are usually explained the next day or below the news section in small letters. Although popular since the 19th century, the day is not a public holiday in any country.” (Wikipedia)

But with hoax or fake news doing the round, people are increasingly paranoiac or dubious about making use of it. In Stockholm – Swedish and Norwegian newspapers on Friday said they would refrain from the tradition of publishing April Fools’ Day jokes this year over fears that it might spread “fake news”.

Here are examples of news on 1 April 2017.

Triple-decker plane

Emirates airline almost had us going with the claim that it’s planning to unveil a triple-decker plane. Why? Time zones. The UAE gets to 1 April before the UK and without that all-important date-stamp… could it possibly – somehow – be true?

No, is the answer. The Dubai-based carrier has not designed a plane including “a swimming pool, games room, gym & park”.

The Witness reported that Eskom, backed by the health department would push for emergency legislation to force everybody over the age of 8 to cycle for a minimum of 30 minutes to help save the power utility. Every household would have to buy a Power Up stationary bicycle which would convert mechanical energy into electrical current via an inverter.

Beeld reported that President Jacob Zuma had had a long hard think and finally decided that the right thing to do would be to pay back the money spent on non-security upgrades at his home in Nkandla.. “His excellency, Pres. Jacob G. Zuma, gave the matter a lot of thought and came to the conclusion that it would be in the best interests of the country to pay back all the money,” a spokesperson said.

But this is not April Fools!!!

EARTH HOUR IN CAPE TOWN (25 MAR)
Do your part this March and participate in the 2017 global initiative, Earth Hour in Cape Town on Saturday, 25 March 2017. The grassroots movement was started by World Wildlife Fund in 2007 in Australia, where 2.2 million residents in Sydney turned off their lights for an hour. To date, more than 7000 cities and towns worldwide have taken part in this worthy cause. SO ENCOURAGE YOUR NEIGHBORS TO DO THE SAME.

 —————

Human Rights Day in South Africa on March 21 every year as a celebration of democracy and remembering the events and sacrifices for those who helped achieve it. The country’s struggle for justice and equality does not however mean that freedom of speech must be sacrificed. More terrifying is the influence of social media who can say what they want, crucify the concept of freedom of speech and use it stripped of context. Even worse, blacken reputations with personal attacks of a person.

This brings me to the new swear word starting with a C – “Colonialism.” And the storm in a teacup that resulted from two tweets.

According to Oxford Dictionaries, “colonialism” means “the policy of acquiring full or partial political control over another country, occupying it with settlers.   Many South Africans are the descendants of slaves, migrants who was brought or fled to the Cape Colony from 1653 until 1822. Jan van Riebeeck, of the Netherlands who founded the first colony at Cape Town in 1652, was a dedicated official who found a few bushmen and Hottentots the area, and apart from his directive to start   a halfway house  for proviand  which was a method one nation controlling another for economic gain.  This made the Boer farmers so mad that they decided to trek into the unknown interior.

But does Zille’s tweets not also have a layer of truth? Far be it for moral justifiers like Max du Preez to say she “ must go” Premier Zille posted a number of tweets in the context of her visit to Singapore; a country that was colonised, but has made great strides to develop, empower its citizens, and prosper. In two tweets, Premier Zille said that the legacy of colonialism has benefitted South Africa in several ways, AND I AGREE that colonialism, also has a good side such as economic growth, enculturation, technology, and not being an isolated society.

We as a society has forgotten the lessons about tolerance and understanding that Madiba taught us. Instead debate has deteriorated into stereotypical and personal attacks.  Of course this is the old story of the tail wagging the dog, and a way of deflecting us from more serious issues such as murder, corruption, misuse of our tax money and the shenanigans of politicians.   It is time to heal the divisions, unite in our diversity and strive for democratic values, social justice and human rights.

And remember… “The point of modern propaganda isn’t only to misinform or push an agenda. It is to exhaust your critical thinking, to annihilate truth.” – Garry Kasparov

I have included the first four books that give and insightful look in our society…good or bad.

Top reads for March – Week 1

Dear Reader
My sincere apologies for the long delay in following up my blog, but now I am ready to carry on. I am a retired librarian and my love for books started me on hunting for and selling second-hand books, especially Africana, Afrikaans books and English books published in South Africa. This “Hobby” has kept me extremely busy the past few years. Not only do I scour bazaars, flea markets, second-hand book shops, charity shops, etc. for specific books and am based in Cape Town, I keep on finding treasures in the most surprising places. Do you know that your local library also sell unwanted books? The best treasure trove I found was in a “Friends of the library” sale in a neighbouring town who had a box of wonderful Africana under a table, classified as “foreign books”.
The old saying in Afrikaans “elke skewe pot kry ‘n deksel” is so true: people collect books because of their love of an area (especially Karoo people), their predilection in reading genres (crime, war) or their high regard for a specific author (the late Hennie Aucamp).
Please tell me what you like/need/ want ….
Here is a selection of books I found the most interesting and which is for sale on my BOB site, http://www.bidorbuy.co.za/seller/2261314/PoggioBooks
